In the year 1950, Alan Turing Created a Chess Computer Program which pre-figured A.I. The first chess algorithm did not  run on a computer. Chess is one of the world's oldest and most popular strategic and analytical games.

Explanation:

  • Almost 60 years ago, a new player entered the game; one powered not by human dedication and intelligence, however  by lines of code on paper, written by computer scientist - Alan Turing.
  • Known by many historians as "the father of computers," Turing first became known when he invented the Bombe, a mechanical tool used by UK intelligence to decode encrypted messages that were sent using the German Enigma machines during World War II.Turing’s accomplishment are considered a turning point of the war.
  • Turing continued his research in the field of computer science, even with working on the basic forms of artificial intelligence.  His approach AI led him to tackle chess, which he considered a way to test artificial brain mettle.
  • In 1948 Turing started to work on his algorithm, before computers could even carry out complex computations. Nevertheless, in 1950, Turing pressed and completed his code. It was a primitive algorithm. His theory was based on just a few of the most fundamental rules of chess, and it could "think" only two moves beforehand.
  • Once the code was written, Alan Turing testet it on a working computer. After many failed attempts at executing  the algorithm using the Ferranti Mark I, the world’s 1st commercially available general-purpose computer, in the year1951, Turing decided to demo the algorithm’s abilities sans using a computer at all.
  • He challenged his friend and colleague Alick Glennie, with the caveat that Turing would play the game using a paper-printed version of his code. When it was Turing’s turn to make a move, he would consult the algorithm and use its “logic” to decide which pieces to move, and where.
  • Because he had to evaluate every move, he took up to 30 minutes each time his turn came to work through the strategy. "Turbochamp" proved he could play an individual in chess — but he couldn't win. In only 29 moves, Glennie defeated Turing.
  • Chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov beat Alan Turing;s Turbochamp,  the first computer chess program ever written by Alan Turing  more than 60 years ago. Russian chess champion played a short match against Turing's 1950 Turochamp system, before computers were invented.
