Untouchability was described as a “slur and a blot” on the “fair name of India”. After the Constitution was adopted, it was also abolished.

The Hindu temples, which were earlier open for only the higher castes were opened for the untouchables as well.

After an extended debate, the Constituent Assembly also suggested that a fair percentage of legislative seats and government jobs should also be reserved for lowest caste members.
