Which previous knowledge did Gutenberg drew to design his innovation in the form of a printing press?

From his childhood he had seen wine and olive presses. He learnt the art of polishing stones ,became a master goldsmith and expertised to create lead moulds used for trinkets. The olive press provided the model for the printing press and moulds were used for Casting the metal types for the letters of the alphabet.

Gutenberg got the idea of the printing press from his works which he had learned from his father's estate. He learned the olive press and learned how to create moulds of metal from his father. He then created moulds of letter. After that he arranged them to form words, then sentences, then paragraph. He kept it on a olive press and put a paper on it with ink spread on the paper. After that he pressed the paper and the mould of letters creating an imprint of the moulds on the paper. With each pressing a paper was printed and in this way he used to print. The first book he printed by this method was Bible
