Griffith concluded that the R-strain bacteria must have taken up what he called a "transforming principle" from the heat-killed S bacteria, which allowed them to "transform" into smooth-coated bacteria and become virulent.

THE PRINCIPLE GIVEN BY GRIFFITH'S

The occurrence of the living S-type virulent bacteria is possible only by their formation from the R-type non-virulent bacteria which pick up the trait of virulence from dead bacteria. This phenomenon is called Griffith's effect or transformation.
