A movie projector is a device that continuously moves film along a path so that each frame of the film is stopped for a fraction of a second in front of a light source. The light source provides extremely bright illumination that casts the image on the filmthrough a lens onto a screen.

The principle that is used is:
When an image moves at a speed of 1/16 th of a second our eyes view the next image as a continuance of the last image
Our brain cannot perceive that the last image was actually moving
This is termed as persistence of vision.
