Answer:

Gandhiji choose Salt as a product for launching Civil Disobedience Movement.

Salt was chosen as the central symbol of protest due to the following reasons:

1. Salt tax , according to Gandhi, was the most inhuman tax , since it affected the starving millions, the sick, the maimed and the helpless.

2. Salt linked the ideal of swaraj with a most concrete and universal grievance of the rural poor.

3. Salt was a source of income for the poor like khadi.

4. Making salt was a monopoly. Since it was a necessity of the household, people were forced to purchase it on higher prices from the shops.

5. The British used to destroy salt collected from the villagers from the sea which led to an increase in national expenditure.

The impact of the Satyagraha was massive. Defiance of the salt laws started all over the country. In TN, C.Rajagopalachari led the march while in Malabar, K. Kelappan led the march to make salt. The violation of the law was seen as a symbol of Indian people's resolve not to live under British-made laws and therefore under British rule. The march was well covered by newspapers as well. Imports of foreign clothes fell, govt income from liquor, excise and land revenue fell and elections to Legislative Assembly were largely boycotted.

The significance of the movement lies in the fact that women, students and youth played a prominent part in the movement, and the extent of mass participation was huge. Merchants, petty traders, tribals, workers and peasants were active participants in the movement. This movement influenced the future course of the freedom struggle by bringing people together on the same platform.
