The heat property, Conduction

When we heat the kettle, it becomes hot.

If the handle was made of iron or steel, and if we touch it, we may burn.

But if it is made of plastic, it is easy to hold and c we will not get any burns

Answer:

• The property that explains why plastics should be used as material for handle of kettle is conduction of heat.

Explanation:

• Conduction is the process in which heat is passed from one molecules to the other molecules in solid state.

• In solids, molecules are compactly packed together with strong intermolecular forces, hence the molecules themselves cannot move. Therefore, they transfer the heat from them to the molecules surrounding them ( because the kettle is made up of a metal)

• By this process, the handle of the kettle if it is kept on fire or stove for long time will eventually heat up.

• And when we would touch the handle of the kettle to pour the liquid inside it, it will burn our hand.

• To avoid this situation, a plastic handle is used for kettles because plastic is an insulator and does not conducts heat, and hence save our hands from burning.
