(a) The two features of carbon that give rise to a large number of compounds are as follows:

(i) Catenation: It is the ability to form bonds with other atoms of carbon.
(ii) Tetravalency: With the valency of four, carbon is capable of bonding with four other atoms.

Answer:

The property of catenation of carbon helps it to form a huge number of compounds. It is basically the property of carbon to form long chains with other elements. Also, the property of tetravalency of Carbon is responsible for it. It is basically the property of its valency 4. Carbon is capable of forming so many compounds, that its study bears a separate branch I'm chemistry, known as Organic Chemistry.
