co2 is heavier then air where co2 extinguisher is aimed at the base of a fire it displaces the oxygen and remove 1 leg of the fire triangle causing the fire to go out . Another way of saying this .... the co2 smothers the fire by preventing the oxygen from reaching the fuel .
Fire triangle : fuel,oxygen and heat.
