Which property of magnet is used in the mariners compass

magnetic compass has two endpoints which are in the direction of north pole and south pole also our distance can clarrify by the compass but when we are in huge area ya disgusting area eg forest such device cant use you know from this satifying definition whicg property are use in!!!
