Very important to keep your hammer eye straight - it's quite easy to slant the eye which will result in an off center handle. also, keep in mind the drift will stick in the eye. there's many ways to prevent the drift from sticking too much lots of info out there so read up.

Hammer faces should be polished and kept free of marks. The blacksmith need chisels for cutting both cold and hot metal.
