(c) Selectively permeable nature

The plasma membrane is referred to as a selectively permeable membrane because it allows only certain molecules to enter and exit the cells. Not all molecules can diffuse freely. When the plasma membrane ruptures or breaks down, molecules of certain substances are free to move in and out of the cells.

The plasma membrane acts as a mechanical barrier, preventing material exchange from its surroundings via osmosis or diffusion in a cell. As a result of the disappearance of the protoplasmic material, the cell would die. It allows hydrophobic molecules and small polar molecules to diffuse through the lipid layer but prevents ions and large polar molecules from doing so.

∴ The property of cell membrane has resulted in observation that it is a Selectively permeable membrane.
