Deep water' is a tale of absolute courage and perseverance. It shows us how, amid all odds, we can make a success of our positive behaviur and our courage to fight. For rather a long time, the narrator's phobia of water or water sources had plagued him. Yet he was able to shake it off entirely as he tries to conquer his fear. He takes an optimistic stance and decides that, regardless of what, he will fight his fear.

- The experience of Douglas in YMCA left in his heart a deep fear of water. He began to stop going close to water, and this fear was for several years with him. It prevented him from boating, swimming, and fishing, besides ruining his social life.
- The incident had taken place when he was around 10 or 11 years old at the YMCA pool. A bully kid flung him into the deep end of the pool. He went down to the ground and almost drowned in the pool..

- It was suggested by Douglas mother that he learn to swim at the YMCA pool because it was safe, with a slow dropping from 2-3 feet deep at the shallow end to nine feet at the opposite end. So we can say that it was because of Douglas' mother's one decision that Douglas endured several challenges before he had become successful
