Solution:
A transformer is a device that is constructed based on the principle of Induction (Mutual Induction).
In the construction of Transformers, A single core is coiled on two ends which are labeled as Primary and Secondary Cores. Based on this windings of the core, some losses are always associated with this setup which lead to depletion or losses to the transformer.
Some of the major losses are:
- Hysteresis Loss due to changing Magnetic Field
- Production of small currents called Eddy Currents.
- Copper or Ohmic loss which occur due to large current flow.
- Magnetic Flux Leakage due to which efficiency decreases.
These are 4 major losses which occur in transformers causing a depletion in the efficiency.
Control of these losses:
- Replacing Core with a material having least hysteresis loop like steel can control Hysteresis loss.
- By splitting the core into thin lines like a comb can reduce Eddy Currents.
- Magnetic Flux leakage can be controlled by decreasing the distance between the primary and secondary cores.
