First propane is converted to a mixture of isopropyl bromide & n-propyl bromide. Then elimination of HBr to produce propene. Further oxidation by hot, concentrate permanganate solution followed by acidification to get Acetic acid.
Cold, dilute permanganate produce 1,2-diol on reaction with alkene. Hot, conc. permanganate also produce 1,2-diol but 1,2-diol further oxidise to a mixture of acid. Here acetic and formic acid is produced and formic acid further oxidise to carbon dioxide, which liberated as a gas.
