Reagent : normally the acyl halide (e.g. usually RCOCl) with aluminum trichloride, AlCl3, a Lewis acid catalyst. Alternatively, the acid anhydride, i.e. (RCO)2O, can be used instead of the acyl halide. The AlCl3 enhances the electrophilicity of the acyl halide by complexing with the halide.

  • It is commonly known as acyl chloride or acid chloride. Benzene ring is reacted with a mixture of ethanoyl chloride CH3COCl and AlCl3 (aluminium chloride) that acts as a catalyst. The product formed is a ketone called phenylethanone.
  • This reaction is an example of an electrophilic substitution reaction.
