The Koshi is 720 km (450 mi) long and drains an area of about 74,500 km sq (28,800 sq mi) in Tibet, Nepal and Bihar. Its unstable nature has been attributed to the heavy silt it carries during the monsoon season and flooding in Bihar has extreme effects.

One of my friend is basically from Khagaria district from Bihar (See on Map for better understanding). He has been in Flood for 3 times in 2001,2004 & 2008. Believe me it’s very painful. Describing it in words isn’t possible but i’ll try my best here. If you can imagine pain of your own neighbour getting flushed & you can’t do anything for them or if you can imagine people fighting for foods because their grains were flushed on first day, if you can image even a little bit of this you can feel the http://pain. I am going to discuss one of my friends story.

As discussed with him before writing this. He was sitting on roof of his house with his mother, father and younger brother and counting days like 1…2….3…4…. 1 month…. 2 month and then 3rd month when they were able to get down of our roof. They were burning their furniture for cooking food for months and finally time came when there weren’t a chair to sit .He and his family members were fortunate enough to survive through those time…..They had enough storage of foods to feed themselves as well all those who came to their home for sharing some sq. feet because their homes were flushed. He and his parents were sharing their part of foods with other villagers. He said he wasn’t able to go to school for 3 months due to which he couldn’t complete his 7th grade. He states he still feel pain when he recalls how cattle were dying due to lack of foods for them. Everyday some NEWS of deaths , Falling of someone’s house or accident of boats used to come to them. The most scaring moment of this time was the night when the boundary of his house falled with huge noise due to continuous water current hitting it. Falling of boundary wasn’t scary but the scaring part was imagination of falling of theirr House which was then giving shelter to about 15 or more people. Other problems which started after a month was sanitation and health issues. If someone was falling sick then they had no option other than traditional way of treatment. Drinking water was available only at some high places which wasn’t submersed in flood. He said that it become their habit of seeing poisonous Snakes and acting normal. For passing time they had two options either play indoor games or See helicopters hovering over us. Completing all works before sunset were compulsion due to lack of other sources of http://lightening.

It would be wrong saying government wasn’t helping. Government tried a lot like dropping of food packets one in 2 days at some places of village. They were instructed to put red flag on their home in case of emergency so they can bring help to them. Red flag was also used to indicate shortage of foods. But he admitted there wasn’t any medical help available and security was a big issue. News were coming of loots in some areas but police never reached their. Radio was only a way to connect with outer world and yes one way communication only. Telephone lines were very few and that too out of order. Mobile phone’s battery dead. The only thing we had was HOPE.

The above story is of one time food during 2008. I don’t know what media people showed to outer world but i’m sure no one can cover full story. Those were tough time and taught them many things. They learnt many survival skills. My friend learnt helping each other and getting over tough situation.Humanity is above all because other people risking their life for saving unknowns. These tough time also learnt them enjoying life in good time and living with limited resources in worst situation. The most positive thing learnt not depending & blaming government all the time. He learnt having patience and believing in Almighty. But all those who faced flood weren’t lucky, many lost their dear one and ways of living.I hope you got answer why “Kosi is sorrow of Bihar”.
