You can determine the direction of magnetic field in the current carrying conductor my right hand grip rule.
In this rule, if the thumb directs the direction of current, then your other fingers will direct the direction of magnetic field lines. In other words, notice that if your thumb points downwards (which means that the direction of current is downwards), the other fingers will be in a clockwise direction. Thus when direction of current is downwards, direction of magnetic field lines will be clockwise and vice versa.
Other rules are there such as Maxwell's Corkscrew Rule and Swimming rule but these are not widely used.
