It is the Fleming's Right Hand rule which comes into play here.

During the change of K.E. (Kinetic energy) into electrical energy, we use the right hand rule to figure out the direction of the electric current. In the right hand rule, the thumb indicates the direction of force, Index finger the direction of field and middle finger shows the direction of current.

Also to note that when accounting for electric motors, it is the left hand rule which is used.
