Harshavardhana was defeated by Pulakeshin-II, the great Chalukya king, on the banks of river Narmada in 630 A.D. Pulakeshin II was the south Indian Emperor of the Chalukya Dynasty. Harsha was defeated when he tried to expand his Empire into the southern peninsula of India.
