Prithviraj Chauhan founded Ajmer (Ajaya-meru in Sanskrit) in the late seventh century C.E. as the capital of the Chauhan dynasty. The city fell to Muhammad of Ghor in 1193 who founded the Delhi Sultanate. Emperor Akbar brought the Ajmer under Mughal control in 1559 until 1770 when the Marathas took control.
