Slavery and child-marriage were two major evils, prevalent in India during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The upper caste and nobility in India, always had the upper hand and persecuted the lower castes. They kept slaves who were treated inhumanly. In 1845, slavery was banned and gradually, states brought out their own proclamations, banning slavery.

Similarly, child-marriage was abolished by the Age of Consent Act of 1891.
