The most common ones are sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate . They decompose to respective nitrate (residue) and oxygen (colourless gas) on heating . lithium nitrate decompose to give it's oxide , nitrogen dioxide (reddish brown gas) and oxygen on heating , similar to the nitrates of most divalent and trivalent metals .
