This is an age-old debate based on nature vs nurture and I support the concept of nurture. In other words, the environment plays an important role in the phenotypic expressions of any trait.

Genes are the basis of heredity but environmental conditions can change a trait and make it fit for survival. Natural selection acts on it and makes it adaptable. Without this, evolution wouldn't have been possible.

This is basically phenotypic plasticity which defines the extent to which a phenotype can be affected by the environmental conditions.
