Primary body waves (p waves) can travel through liquid medium. Secondary body waves (s waves) cannot

Liquids spring back when compressed, but have no strength against shearing. Hence compressional waves, also called P for primary waves, can travel in water, while shear waves, also called S for secondary waves, do not. Love and Rayleigh surface waves also involve shearing, and hence do not travel through water.

Water, in contrast, can transmit gravity surface waves, while gravity has little influence on the most common seismic waves.
