Explanation: Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on 14th April 1891 in the military cantonment of Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, India.His father Ramji Maloji Sakpal served as a Subedar in the army.
Since he belonged to the Dalit Mahar caste, who were treated as untouchables, he often faced humiliation since childhood in the hands of his schoolfellows.
He cleared his matriculation examination in 1907 and took admission the next year in Elphinstone College. Since the college was affiliated to the University of Bombay he became the first ever person of Mahar caste to do so. In 1912 he earned his degree from Bombay University in the field of economics and political science and soon geared up to take up job with the Baroda state government.
He was awarded Baroda State Scholarship in 1913 under a scheme of arrangement laid by Sayajirao Gaekwad III (Gaekwad of Baroda). Under this scheme students were offered £11.50 (Sterling) each month for a period of three years for completing their postgraduate education at Columbia University in New York City.He took up the Baroda Public Service at the Gaekwad’s request.
