The shape shown in the figure is called "I- section"
The cross section is in the shape of 'I' and top view is a rectangle.

This shape is called  "I" section or "I" beam.  These are used in beams as supports under bridges, as beams in construction of houses etc. 

I section beams are used in the construction railway tracks.  The reason for their use is the high moment of inertia, so that it resists overturning to one side.
It has a good tensile strength for a given amount of mass.
