Walking on wet floor is an example which shows that friction is undesirable.

  • Friction is defined as the force which resists the sliding or rolling of a solid or fluid object over another. There are 4 types- static friction, sliding friction, rolling friction and fluid friction.
  • While walking on a wet floor, he friction between our feet and the floor is decreased. This is because the water acts as a lubricant between our feet and the floor and reduces the coefficient of friction, therefore reducing the limiting friction considerably. This is the reason we slip.
  • Pushing furniture is a kind of sliding friction. Here, the force applied should be greater than that equal to static friction in order to make the furniture move. That is why it is easier to push furniture once its starts moving.
  • While approaching a stoplight, we apply the breaks of our cars and it immediately comes to a halt. This is thanks to the friction between the tyres and the road.
  • Lighting a matchstick also involves friction, dut to which heat is generated and the matchstick is ignited.
