Just a wild guess--you're talking about the Scopes 'Monkey' Trial in Tennessee in 1925. Mencken took the side of evolution because he didn't think the Christians made their case--or even believed they needed to. He saw it as the triumph of ignorance and dogma. Creationists won the battle but lost the war. The trial ended up hurting their case more than helping it. 

(Christians of that time claimed that they were against Darwin's theory because they believed widespread acceptance of it would lead to 'Social Darwinism'. If true, that's certainly commendable. Today's Christian Right are about as socially-darwinistic as you can get!) 

H.L. Mencken is one of my favorite writers of the 20th century. His kind of humor is still funny today. He wrote about how stupid Americans are, but it wasn't as mean-spirited as political humor is today.
