Distilled water is very expensive compared to other forms of purified water. Water for soda does not need to be very pure in the chemical sense, it just needs to be “potable” which means safe to drink and with a taste that does not interfere with the taste of the soda. Usually municipal drinking water is satisfactory although some water may be purified by filtration, carbon treatment (to remove the chlorine) or reverse osmosis for marketing or taste purposes.

Distilled water has very low levels of microbiological contamination but such purity is overkill for sodas...............
