During the electrolytic purification of copper, the electrolyte is taken as copper(II) sulphate (CuSO4). Is there any particular reason for this? Could another salt of copper, say CuCl2 work?
I mean, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't. The only difference will be, that at the anode chlorine instead of oxygen will be evolved, which doesn't seem to be such a big thing.

Copper Sulphate(CuSO4) is preferred as Copper is lower in the electrochemical series than many metals so copper can be displaced quite easily
