Welfare state can intervene in social and economic activities so that there is equality in all spheres of society.

A welfare state is committed to providing basic facilities to the weaker sections of the society for their economic security, protecting their socio-political rights.

The concept of welfare society was first introduced in the United Kingdom after world war 2. Since then nations of the world follow the ideals of the welfare state.

Welfare states can be categorized into three ideal regime types:

  • Liberal welfare state.
  • Conservative welfare state.
  • Social democratic welfare state.

The basic purpose of the welfare states are:

  • Ensuring employment opportunities: as poverty is the consequence of unemployment, the government provides employment that ensures their economic growth.
  • Food security: welfare states take care of the food supplies so that the downtrodden do not face hunger.
  • Healthcare facilities: providing free health checkups, availability of hospitals in the rural areas are some of the schemes of welfare states.
  • Education facilities: these include free education till 14 yrs of age(like in India), providing fellowship and scholarship in higher studies.
  • Old age care: welfare states services to old people who need more care. They are provided housing facilities, pension, subsidies etc.
