The surangam harvesting system is used in Keral and southern districts of Karnataka. Surangam is a kannad word for tunnel.
It is a horizontal well excavated in hard laterite rock formations.
The excavation is done until a good amount of ground water is found.
The ground water leaks out of the hard rock and flows through the tunnel to an opening where the water is collected for irrigation and other purposes.
