Part XI of the Constitution of India consists of Articles on relations between the Union and the States. Articles 245 - 255 are on distribution of Legislative powers. The legislative subjects are divided into three lists. List I or the Union List, List II or the State List, and List III or the Concurrent List.
The legislature of any State has exclusive power to make laws for the State on subjects enumerated in List II in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution which is known as the State List. For example, subjects like public order, public health and sanitation, fisheries, agriculture, markets, and local government.
It can also make laws on subjects enumerated in the Concurrent List. For example, subjects like marriage and divorce, labour welfare, population control and family planning.
