India is one of the largest producers of rice in the world, second only to China. Approximately one-fifth of the total world produce of rice is cultivated in India with an annual estimated production of 105 million tons. A principal food crop, rice cultivation covers the largest area among food grains in India. Being a tropical plant, rice flourishes with ease in hot and humid Indian climate, especially in the areas receiving heavy rainfall. The crop demands more than 100-centimeter rainfall and a temperature of 25 degree Celsius.

West Bengal tops the list of rice producing states with 14677.2 thousand tons of rice production in the year 2014-15. The state alone produces more than 14% of the rice the country produces. Rice is grown in major parts of lower Ganges planes, especially in the districts of Midnapur, Bardhman, 24 Paraganas, Banka, Birbhum etc.

Uttar Pradesh comes at second place with 12167.9 thousand tons of rice production. About 25% of the cultivated area of the state is devoted to rice production. Bareilly, Muzaffarnagar, Gorakhpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Faizabad, Barabanki etc. are the major rice producing districts of the state.

State of Punjab occupies third place with a production of 11107 thousand tons of rice in the year 2014-15. Although basically a wheat growing state, the farmers have utilized crop rotation and used perennial irrigation sources to grow rice. In terms of per hectare yield of rice, Punjab tops the charts. Patiala, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Sangrur are the major rice producing districts of the state.

Odisha has made tremendous progress in rice production and now occupies the fourth place with a production of 8298.2 thousand tons of rice in the year 2014-15; ahead of Andhra Pradesh – which used to occupy second position before the creation of Telangana – comes at the fifth place with a production of 7233.9 thousand tons of rice. East Godavari district is known as “Rice Bowl of Andhra Pradesh”.

Chhattisgarh – the state traditionally known as “Rice Bowl of India” – usually comes next; but in the year 2014-15, Bihar has edged passed the state with a rice production of 6356.7 thousand tons. Chhattisgarh rice production for the year 2014-15 is 6322.1 thousand tons.
