It is under the "Treaty of Cession 1956" that states that the people of Pondicherry can use French as their official language until the elected candidates of Pondicherry cancel its use officially.
Although Tamil is the most used language in the state for official purposes, the "Pondicherry Official Language Act, 1965" states that languages such as Telugu, Malayalam along with English will also be used for communication within the union territory.
