The following statement about oxides is correct - C) Magnesium oxide will react with nitric acid to make a salt.

The reaction is -

MgO+2HNO_{3}Mg(NO_{3})_{2}+H_{2}O

To solve this type of question, one of the basic properties of metal and non metals regarding their oxides is taken into consideration.

Metals form basic oxides, hence the pH of their solution will be greater than 7. Non metals form acidic oxides, hence the pH of their solution will be less than 7.

From the given options,

C Acids react with bases to give salt and water in neutralization reaction. As magnesium oxide is basic in nature, it will react with nitric acid to make salt of magnesium nitrate.

A talks about magnesium which is a metal. Hence, solution of magnesium oxide will have pH greater than 7, not less than 7.

B talks about sulfur which is a nonmetal. Hence, sulfur dioxide solution will have pH less than 7, not greater than 7.

D Sulfur dioxide will not react with hydrochloric acid to make salt and water. This is because sulfur dioxide will be acidic in nature.
