a).Electron gain enthalpy is the amount of energy released when an isolated gaseous atom accepts an extra electron to form the gaseous negative ion. So, when we talk about the noble gases , they have completely filled shells so they have not any space to place an extra electron in their valence orbital and so the electron is placed in next higher energy level which requires a huge energy to be supplied and so the electron gain enthalpy is positive for noble gases.

b).Along a period, the electron gain enthalpy increases and it becomes maximum negative in halogensbecause, they have the valance shell configuration ns2np5 which requires only one electron to be stable and so they have stronger tendency to accept electron and so they have highest negative electron gain enthalpy.

c).Electron gain enthalpy is not zero for Be, Mg ,N and P rather it has fixed value as, Be has +66KJ/mol, Mg has +67KJ/mol, N has +31KJ/mol and P has -74KJ /mol.

d).Due to the smaller size of Fluorine atoms, they have comparatively larger electron-electron repulsion in 2p -sub shell so that the incoming electron is not accepted as easily as in chlorine atoms and so, the electron gain enthalpy of F is comparatively less negative than that of Cl.
