★ What is Ionic compounds ?
- Compound formed by transfer of electrons are called ionic compounds or electrovalent compounds.
★ Properties of ionic compounds :
1. Physical state
- Ionic compounds are solid and hard because of the strong force of attraction between the positive and negative ions .
2. Melting and Boiling point
- Ionic compounds have high melting points and boiling points because due to strong force of between the positive and negative charged ions.
3. Solubility
- These compounds are generally soluble in water and but insoluble in solvents like kerosene and petrol etc.
4. Conduction of Electricity
- Ionic compounds do not conduct electricity in solid state since the moment of ions is not possible.
- But in molten state, the force of attraction between the ions is overcome due to heat. Hence ions can move freely and conduct electricity.
