Which statement best summarizes the status of the Civil War after the Battle of Chancellorsville? Although Confederates were often outnumbered, they continued to win major battles. Because the Union was better equipped and had a larger army, it had won major victories. The large size of the Union’s army kept the South from winning major battles. The South quickly retreated in the face of the North’s much larger and better-equipped army.

Although Confederates were often outnumbered, they continued to win major battles.

It is a reality that the Confederates had a small army compared to the Union but they kept up the heat after the Battle of Chancellorsville in which General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia defeated the mighty Union Army led by Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker's Army of the Potomac, which was roughly double its size and yet lost the battle.
