Mughal emperor Akbar allowed free expression of religion. He even established a new religion called Din-i-llahi, incorporating all the goodness of other religions. His idea was to settle cultural, social and political differences, through this religion.
During his reign (1556 – 1605), Akbar patronised several Hindu scholars, poets and artists in his court, which in itself was a sign of his religious tolerance and magnanimity.
However, during emperor Aurangzeb’s rule (1658 – 1707), the religious amity and tolerance gave way to a conservative approach to religion and intolerance.
