So I’ve seen the other answers and mine may be conflicting to theirs but mine would be chemistry over Microbiology.
Firstly it is due to when doing my chemistry degree and work, Microbiology was a topic that you could specialise in through the chemistry work.
Chemistry is the study of chemical processes within living organisms. In order to know these details we must also know a lot more information such as morphology, physiology etc..(ology). This means that most subjects that fall within this description (microbiology) are covered in chemistry syllabus BUT If you wish to specialise then Microbiology is great.
Remember that chemistry is a large expansive topic that you in a lifetime could never truly 100% cover, though entering a specialisation of the topic such as; Proteomics, Plant Biology, Neurology, Drugs and pharmacology ( These were my strongest topics towards the end of my degree).
chemistry is a useful certification to have as it is GENERiC it encompasses a lot of information in a general way leaving you with options further down the road whilst Microbiology is SPECIFIC. If you are 100% certain you want to specialise do it and go with Microbiology but if you are uncertain (as this question makes it seem so) then I would pick chemistry.
