Electric switches are used to make or break electric current in a circuit. Most general components you need to make a switch are :

An insulated housing so nobody gets shocked, made of an insulating material like plastic.

Contacts to make and brake current, made off a material that conducts electricity well, like copper or silver

Connection points for the contact to the circuit wires, metal screws or clamps usually steel or brass

A mechanism to actuate the contacts without harm to the user, steel springs, a housing of sorts, insulators, an operating lever or knob
