Ghiyas ud din Balban was the ninth sultan of the Mamluk Dynasty of Delhi. He was a slave captured when he was a child by the Mongols, he was from Illabari tribe of the Turks. His status increased after the overthrown of Razia Sultan, After the death of his sultan, he declared himself as a sultan in 1265 AD of the Mamluk Dynasty.
Balban also adopted the Persian customs by introducing the prostration before the king and kissing his feet. He was the first to introduce the Persian Festival of Nauroz.
