Given:

Number of positive tiles = 4

Number of negative tiles = 7

To find:

The correct sum of tiles=?

Solution:

  • The model here depicts four tiles labeled as "positive" and seven tiles labeled as "negative".
  • This implies calculating the sum of the given two integers.
  • Therefore find the sum of given integers in the following way:

     => = + 4 tiles + (-7 tiles)

     => = + 4 tiles -7 tiles (∵ plus into minus implies minus for the integers)

     => = -3 (The answer always gets the sign of the highest number)

Hence, negative 3 or -3  (option A) is the correct sum of the model.
