e characteristic feature of the synchronous motor is to run at synchronous speed, which means if the motor is having 4 poles with 50HZ frequency then it should run at ( Ns=120f/p) 1500rpm.
when a three phase supply is given to the stator of synchronous motor, it creates rotating magnetic field which rotates at synchronous speed(Ns). so if the rotor is applied with dc supply, an stationary magnetic field will be created and this stationary magnetic field will try to catch the rotating magnetic field and if it once catches, the rotor also rotates in sysnchronous speed. this phenomena is also called as magnetic locking.
