Mars's  surface is red because of iron oxide. Mars is literally covered with  rust, but in powder form. However, the surface of the planet is commonly  described as being butterscotch in color, with the redness being caused  due to dust in Mars's thin atmosphere.

Mars  has been recorded observed historically, and its name across all  cultures has a reference to the color red. In English, it is named after  the Roman god of war due to the association with blood. Mars's symbol  is a sword and shield, which is the symbol for the male sex.

Mars's   two moons, Phobos and Deimos, are named after the two companions of the  Greek god of war, Ares.  Their names mean 'fear' and 'terror'. These  two moons are irregularly shaped. Phobos orbits Mars twice in a Martian  day, while Deimos's orbit is a bit longer than a day. Both the moons  orbit in opposite directions. Phobos is currently spiraling towards  Mars and will one day crash into it. Both moons are most likely captured  asteroids.

The common surface features of Mars include dark slope streaks, dust devil tracks, sand dunes, Medusae Fossae Formation, fretted terrain, layers, gullies, glaciers, scalloped topography, chaos terrain, possible ancient rivers, pedestal craters, brain terrain, and ring mold craters.

Hope this helps...   : )
