The immune system of the body is essential in determining the number of microbes which is present in the body of an individual.

In diseases, when the immune system fails like that of AIDS, the number of microbes increases a lot.  

The immune system consists of humoral immunity which is provided by the antibodies in the blood and the cellular immunity which is produced by the neutrophils in the blood.
