"Old Regime" meaning old order is the term generally used to describe the society and institutions of France before the Revolution of 1789.

It was the period of crushed society in France. There was an absolute monarchy and king was head of all three forms of government. The society was divided into three classes. The Nobility class was called First Estate, the clergy made up the Second Estate and common people were part of Third Estate. The first two estates enjoyed more than 95% of land and wealth. The condition of Third Estate was very miserable. They alone had to pay taxes and were exploited by the first two estates.
