Step-by-step explanation:

let first term of AP = a

common difference = d

let nth term of AP = 17

given a3 = 38

a+2d = 38 ...............1

& a8 = 23

a+7d = 23 ..................2

subtracting equation 1 and equation 2

a+2d - a-7d = 38-23

-5d = 15

d = -3

no in equation 1 we put the value of 2d = -3

a+ 2(-3) = 38

a = 44

an = 17

a+(n-1)d = 17

44 + (n-1)-3 = 17

-3n+3= 17-44

-3n = -27

n = 9
